Healthcare

Neighborhoods

Northwest side (Haad Yao, Chalok Lam) regarded as the chill side of the island — better for people wanting quiet beaches and gyms over party scene.

Notes

Mixed reports on atmosphere. Some friction between locals and tourists reported (scooter near-misses, rudeness). Beaches and nature are the main draw; town areas less so. Best visited with low expectations for nightlife/social scene.

Chiang Mai

Air Quality & Burning Season

Burning season runs roughly February–April. As of mid-March 2026: AQI hits red levels in mornings, but conditions varied (some cloudy/rainy days keeping it manageable). Rain has been reported to significantly improve air quality during this period. Air purifiers available in some coworking spaces and hotels — worth confirming before booking. Nomad presence still active during this period despite the air quality.

As of early April 2026: air quality continuing to worsen through the season. Some nomads staying through regardless, waiting for Songkran.

Neighborhoods

Nimman: popular but noted as noisy — not the quiet retreat some expect.

Pattaya

Seasonality

Rainy season runs approximately April–November. Rain typically comes in short, intense episodes rather than all-day downpours. Noted as having child-friendly services and infrastructure for families.

Ko Samui

Notes

Underrated relative to its Nomad List ranking (as of March 2026). Good beaches, reasonable cost of living, active nightlife. Some power reliability issues reported. Hospital quality on the island is considered decent and significantly cheaper than US equivalents.

Healthcare

Hospital options across the Gulf islands vary. Ko Samui has the most established facilities; Koh Phangan and Ko Lanta have hospitals but with mixed reports on quality. All considerably cheaper than US healthcare. Worth checking specific hospital reviews before relying on island-based care for anything serious.

Bangkok

Overview

Frequently recommended as the easiest affordable entry point for digital nomad beginners. Infrastructure, cost of living, and existing nomad community lower the barrier to entry. Some long-term nomads have settled in Bangkok specifically for routine and stability after years of moving. Pollution and sleaze noted as persistent downsides.

Neighborhoods

Sukhumvit 11 reportedly shifting toward a "Little India" character (as of April 2026).

For quiet areas comparable to Chiang Mai's Nimman: BTS-adjacent neighborhoods recommended — Nana, Thong Lo, On Nut, Udom Suk. Talat Noi/Songwat (old town riverside area) and Ari also suggested as quieter alternatives with character.

Food

Healthy eating: Tom Kha Gai and Tom Yum widely available as lower-oil Thai options. Low-oil delivery options exist on Grab but require searching. Finding no-plastic, genuinely low-oil delivery remains difficult.

Practical

DMK (Don Mueang) airport: night markets located near airport-area hotels — useful for late arrivals or early departures.

Transit

Bangkok–Surat Thani train route: a practical 12-day itinerary with stops at Sam Roi Yot, Koh Tao, and Koh Phangan before reaching Surat Thani. A good way to see the Gulf coast without flying.

Chiang Mai / Pai

Driving

International Driving Permit (IDP) is essential for renting cars — without one, insurance is void and fines apply. For scooters/bikes, enforcement is more lenient and varies by area, though having an IDP is still advisable. Physical copy required (digital not accepted). IDP can be shipped from home country via postal service if not obtained before departure.

In tourist-heavy areas (Phuket especially), police checkpoints targeting foreigners on scooters are common — expect bribes if riding without proper documentation.

Sports & Recreation

Visa & Tax

Free 30-day visa extensions have been reported for travelers affected by Middle East war-related flight cancellations (as of early 2026). Confirm current policy with immigration before relying on this.

Visa Runs & Extensions (April 2026)

Stricter enforcement at Bangkok airport against short (1–2 day) visa runs. Extensions now capped at 2 per year: 30 days on the first, 7 days on the second. Land border entries are ineligible for extensions. Annual stay day caps being applied and scrutiny increasing after repeated runs. Rejections reported at Nonthaburi immigration office.

DTV (Digital Traveler Visa)

Generally smooth after 180 days. Occasional requests for onward tickets — airport-dependent; having one ready (or using TDAC) advisable. For remote workers: no Thai employer registration needed if employer is offshore, but tax residency risks apply if staying 180+ days in a calendar year.
